What Kind of Refrigerant Do Heat Pumps Employ

In the past, Freon was widely used for heat pump systems. At first, Refrigerant R22 occupied the market. But with the awareness of its harm to the ozonosphere, besides raising the COP of heat pumps, scientists strive to develop new working medium to replace Freon.
Nowadays, R410A and R407C are the most popular environmentally-friendly refrigerants.
The working pressure of R410A is 1.6 times as high as that of R22. It has steady and non-toxic performance. Free from chlorine, R410A does no harm to the ozonosphere. It is accepted by the American and European countries.
R407C can work in the system of R22, but some components and lubrication oil have to be changed. When filling the system, we must use liquid R407C for its performance is not so steady.

How to Value the Performance of a Heat Pump?

Performance of heat pumps is valued usually by Coefficient of Performance (COP for short). COP stands for the amount of heat transferred to the high-temperature objects from the low-temperature ones divided by the motive power amount needed. Generally COP stays between 3 and 4, which means heat pumps can transfer heat three or four times higher than what it consumes to the high-temperature objects. So heat pumps are in fact a heat elevator. They consume very little electricity when working but they can absorb heat four to seven times higher than electricity from the environmental medium such as water, air and soil. It is one of their environmentally-friendly point for they elevate the temperature and use it.

How Does a Heat Pump Work

It is known to all that like water flows towards the lower level, heat is transferred to the lower-temperature object from the one of higher temperature. But actually faced with the energy deficiency, we design to collect the low-temperature heat in nature such as from the air and from the river water. Heat pumps make use of such heat for water and air heating.

Heat pumps work similar as what an air conditioner does. Generally, a cooling system (with a compressor) is made of four main parts: compressor, condenser, throttling valve and evaporator. The liquid refrigerant with low temperature and low pressure absorbs heat collected by the evaporator and then becomes low-pressure gas. Then it is pressed into high-temperature and high-pressure gas in the compressor. It passes its own heat to the cold water and turns into liquid with high temperature. Moving through the throttling components (capillary tubes, thermostatic expansion valve and electronic expansion valve), refrigerant becomes low-temperature and low-pressure. This a whole cooling cycle.
